Sections & Song Structure

What do verses, choruses, and bridges actually do? Pick a section type, click it into an 8-slot structure, and hear the energy curve change.

A song is not one long ribbon of music — it is built from a handful of sections, snapped together like blocks. Press play and listen all the way through, then rework the structure: pick a section type in the palette and click a slot to place it; click that slot again with the same type selected and it clears. Try a new order and hear how the energy curve changes.

Songs are assembled

Almost every pop song is put together from the same few section types: the intro sets the scene, the verse tells the story, the chorus is the emotional payoff, the bridge breaks the pattern, and the outro winds things down. Sections repeat again and again — and that repetition is exactly why listeners can remember a song.

The energy curve

The order of the sections draws the song's energy curve. Verses sit lower: they push the story forward and build anticipation. The chorus sits highest — it is the payoff, with the catchiest melody and the biggest feeling. A classic map: intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. Count the choruses — three of them. The more important a section is, the more often it repeats.

The bridge breaks the pattern once

If a song just ping-pongs between verse and chorus forever, ears get tired. The bridge's job is to introduce brand-new material late in the song — a new harmony, a new melody, a new mood — exactly once. After that detour, the final chorus lands even harder.

Build your own structure

Here are 8 empty slots. Build a structure from scratch: where do the choruses go? Do you want a bridge? Aim for an energy curve with rises and falls, not a flat line.
