The Pentatonic Scale

Drop the 4th and 7th from the major scale and you get the pentatonic — five notes that never clash, powering everything from folk songs to guitar solos.

Want to improvise but afraid of hitting a wrong note? The keyboard below has every risky note locked away — bang on it freely, and it will sound good no matter what.

Less is more

What you just played is the C major pentatonic scale — only five notes: C, D, E, G and A. It is simply the C major scale with the 4th degree (F) and the 7th degree (B) taken out.

Why those two? Because they are the spiciest notes in the major scale — F sits right next to E, and B right next to C, only a half step apart, which makes them the easiest notes to clash with their neighbors. With them gone, the remaining five notes are at least a whole step apart, and almost any combination sounds fine.

The black-keys secret

A delightful coincidence: the five black keys of the piano are themselves a complete pentatonic scale (F♯ major pentatonic). Improvise on black keys only and you can never sound bad — many people's very first composition happens exactly this way.

This roll shows only the pentatonic notes. Sketch a few dots, press play, tweak and listen again — there are no wrong notes here, only combinations you like more or less.

Everywhere you listen

The pentatonic scale may be one of humanity's oldest shared languages: Chinese folk songs, Scottish ballads, African chants, the blues and rock guitar solos all lean on it. Next time you hear a guitarist tearing through a solo with closed eyes, those five notes are most likely what is under their fingers.

Take this with you

  • Major pentatonic = the major scale minus its 4th and 7th degrees.
  • No half-step neighbors means almost nothing clashes — the safest improv tool there is.
  • The five black keys are a ready-made pentatonic scale.
